I recognized this as a nymph of the Statilia maculata mantis because of its brown color (other species in Shanghai, for example, the Hierodula patellifera all have green nymphs). Found this on my class’s farming experience trip in some bushes. I kept mantises as pets before, and from my experiences nymphs like these have a really low rate of surviving because of their fragility, so when I handled it I payed extra attention not to harm it. The Statilia maculata is a thin stick-like mantis that can grow up to, like, 7 or 8cm long, and is one of the friendlier mantises that live in my area (unlike others they usually don’t fight back when being held in my hands).
