This fluffy little moth was photographed near my home in Minhang District, Shanghai on 2021/9/15. The moth was resting on a “no stepping on the grass” sign and I managed to put it in my hands and get a good shot of it. Miraculously, in the process it didn’t fly away and acted as a good model, so I was able to take a few up-close shots. I recognized it as a sort of Parasa moth from the plump shape and fluffy legs and recognized it as Parasa consocia from the brown tint on the end of the wings. Caterpillars of this moth are noticable from their spiky appearance and harsh sting and are called “yang la zi” locally.
