I found this shattered butterfly this afternoon while walking home. It’s wings are broken, and it has a slit on the abdomen, meaning that it s not far from death. Dying, weak bugs are common at this period of time. Their thriving season has past, and since they are not built to hybernate or to get used to the cold, they are only left to die. This is their last dance. Bugs at this stage do not bother feeding or avoiding predators anymore. They normally just stand in one place and see whether it is the coldness that takes them away or that a predator does. They know they are going to die. This type of butterfly, Hestina assimilis is actually a pretty rare species in my area. Native to the forests and mountains, this butterfly does not apper in urban areas very often, and this is my second time encounting a live one.
